Historical Reference
The Chair of Higher Mathematics was established in the first days of the newly
founded Polytechnical Institute.
For a long time, the Chair was headed by the Assoc. Prof. and distinguished scientist
Vruyr Khachatur Torgomyan.
In 1966, in connection with the permanent increase in the students' number, the
Chair of Applied Mathematics was founded. The first Head of the Chair was the
Assoc. Prof. Gohar Hamazasp Hambartsumyan. Later, from 1969 to 1992 the Chair
was headed by Prof. Nazaret Yervand Tovmasyan.
Due to starting new specialties a new Chair of Higher Mathematics was founded
in 1983, headed by Professor Razmik Mihran Barsegyan. In 1991-1992 qualitative
changes took place at Polytechnical Institute. It became State Engineering University
of Armenia. In this connection, in 1992 a three-level educational system was introduced
and all the 3 Chairs were united into the Department of Mathematics headed by
Academician V. S. Zakaryan.
