Historical Reference

The Department of Languages of SEUA comprising the Chairs of Armenian, Russian and Foreign Languages (English, French, German) was founded in 1991.

Before that, these Chairs functioned independently each having its own history. In fact all the languages mentioned above have been taught since the foundation of the University - 1933. However in the academic year 1949 the Chairs of Russian and Foreign Languages were combined in one Chair. Georgi Karagedov was appointed the Head of the Chair.

In 1961 the Chairs were separated. G. Karagedov continued to head the Chair of Russian and Sargis Alemyan became the Head of the Chair of Foreign Languages. Ever since the Chairs have functioned independently. The Chair of Armenian was founded in 1960-s, in the period of organization of Preparatory Courses. In 1985 a new Chair of Russian for foreign students was founded. Later the 2 Chairs of Russian were combined. During the past 70 years many highly qualified and experienced specialists worked at the Chairs and contributed greatly to the cause of language teaching at YPI - SEUA, among them: V. Totovents, S. Alemyan, A. Hovhannisyan, N. Nersisyan, M. Gyulderyan, I. Beletskaya, G. Zakaryan and others.

At present about 60 specialists are employed at the Chairs.
