General Information

The Chair teaches Physics to all students of the University and conducts research work. Teaching is carried out according to 2 programs: a three-term course for engineering specialties and a two –term course for economic specialties and the Junior Engineer program. Together with the Department of Cybernetics students are trained in the specialty ''Physical Electronics". Apart from this, the Chair conducts the course ''General Physics '' (lectures, practical and laboratory classes) at the division of foreign students. A special attention is paid to teaching Physics in SEUA affiliate High School. The Chair carries out methodical consultation, as well as takes different measures to deepen the knowledge-classes in clubs, Olympiads, etc.
Six university laboratories function at the Chair; 2 - on mechanics and molecular physics, 2 - on electricity and magnetism, 2 - on oscillation, wave and quantum physics.
Solar Energy Engineering Laboratory headed by Professor of the Chair of Physics Zh. Panossyan functions at the research sector of SEUA. At present intensive developments of both theoretical and technological character are carried out aimed at creation of high-effective solar converters. The laboratory is located on the ground floor of building 17 of SEUA.
On the initiative of Prof. Aboyan a research X-ray laboratory is founded at the Chair of Physics where intensive scientific work is carried out to develop and apply new X-ray photographic and X-ray interferometric precision methods of investigation of semiconductor crystal imperfections. In 2000 the laboratory was the first all over the world to develop and realize multiple X-ray interferometers. This laboratory is located in building 7 of SEUA.

Historical Reference

The Chair of Physics was founded in 1991 as a result of integrating three chairs of General Physics in Yerevan Polytechnic Institute.
At present 24 Faculty are employed at the Chair among them 4 Dr. Sci., 17 Ph.D. Many of these teachers are Professors and Associate Professors. The Chair occupies the second and third floors of building 9 of SEUA.
The main teaching conception of General Physics accepted by the Chair is as follows: to give the students stable knowledge of basic laws of Physics, basic notions, conceptions and models. It will help the students to acquire skills for solving physical problems; prepare the students to study subjects like electrical engineering, radio-engineering, applied mechanics, etc, which, in essence are additions to the laws of physics to technical problems.
