The
department of Power Engineering(1994) was founded in 1972 as the Faculty
of Power Engineering being separated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
The first Dean of the Faculty was Liparit Ghuloyan. His successors were
Gurgen Hairapetyan(1978-81), Mamikon Bubushyan(1981-86), Hrant Burnachyan(1986-87),
Vostanik Maroukyan(1987-90), Laert Hovhannisyan(1990-93). Hambartsoum
Hovsepyan has been the Head of the Department since 1993. A
prominent Armenian scientist, Member of NAS RA Hrant Adonts was in academic
staff of this Department. The
Department has 4 Chairs: Thermal Power Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering,
Economics, Organization and Planning of Energetic Industry, Environmental
Engineering. The SEUA Honorary Professor L. Ghuloyan, 6 Professors, 29
Associate Professors, 19 Assistant Professors and Lecturers are on the
staff of the Department, 39 of the 55 faculty (71%) have scientific degrees.
At present 577 Undergraduate, 36 Master and 23 Postgraduate students study
here in 8 specialties of 5 degree programs. The
main research directions of the Department are: Improvement of Technological
Schemes for Thermal and Nuclear Power Plants, Optimization of the Operation
Regimes of Power Plants, Problems of Stabilized and Optimum Regimes and
Energy Saving in Power Systems. Elaboration of Measures for Engineering
Protection of Environment from Harmful Exhaustions, Energy and Resource-Saving
Technologies and Equipment. The graduates of the Department work in different
enterprises of the energy sector, in R&D centers or in different government
entities. The main partners of the Department are: Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant, the Natural Monopoly Regulation Committee of RA, SRI "Armatom", the enterprises "Armenergo" and "Electric Networks of Armenia", HPPs of "Sevan-Hrazdan" Cascade. The Department cooperates with the Moscow Institute of Energetics, Royal University in Stockholm, Technical University of Belorus, the Institute of Nuclear Technology in France and other organizations abroad.
