Due to its significance and role, the Department of Computer Systems and Informatics is one of the leading departments at SEUA. It has the largest number of students at the University. It was formed in 1995 on the basis of the formerly existing faculty of Calculating Machines, which was formed as an independent unit in 1979, being separated from the Faculty of Engineering Cybernetics. In 1961, on the basis of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Automatics and Calculating Machines was formed (the first Dean- K. H. Abrahamyan). In 1965 the above mentioned Faculty was renamed as Faculty of Engineering Cybernetics.

The goal of this Faculty was to provide the spheres of design, production and maintenance of ECM with engineering personnel to satisfy the growing needs for the specialists both in the republic and abroad conditioned by the intensive growth of radioelectronic industry in general and computing machinery in particular. At present, the educational programs at all levels existing at SEUA -Junior Engineer, Bachelor of Engineering, Diplomaed Engineer, Master of Engineering, Research Engineer are accomplished at the Department.
The education is carried out on the following specialties

• Software of Calculating Equipment and Computer-aided Systems (22.04)
• Technology and Organization of Information Security (22.06)
• Calculating Machines, Complexes, Systems and Nets (22.01)
• Design and Production of Electronic Calculating Facilities (22.05)
• Information Systems Adapted to the Spheres of Application (07.19)

For this purpose the following four specialized and one general educational Chairs function at the Department.

Chairs (Departments) of the Department (Faculty):

Calculating Machines

Information Security and Software Development

Automated Design of Computing Facilities

Automated Control Systems

Algorithmic Languages and Programming

These Chairs possess a rather powerful scientific and pedagogical potential and professorial staff and young lecturers, too. More than eighty highly qualified specialists teach here, among them seven Professors and 38 Associate Professors. They share their knowledge and experience with more than 1000 students of the Department, involved in different educational programs. In particular, the largest number of students (more than 800) is taking the program course in the Bachelor program. The others are involved in Graduate and Postgraduate programs mainly, as the number of the students in Junior Engineer program is relatively small-about 50 students with its comparatively short, a three-year-old history.
In contrast to the latter, for more than 10 years, the number of foreign students, trained at the Department in English has gradually increased during the last two years and at present exceeds 250. To have a better idea, it is necessary to mention that more than 60 Undergraduate and Graduate students are being specialized at the Armenian branch of American company “Leda Systems”, where an Inter-departmental Chair of Microelectronic Circuits and Systems has been established and functioned for three years now.
With its highly qualified professors and lecturers, the Department is quite active in the sphere of scientific-research work. The main scientific-research domains are:

•Design and implementation of calculating systems and nets
•Design and investigation of semiconductor devices and element base of electronic calculating facilities
•Artificial intellect and coding theory
• Investigation and design of dynamic systems
•Application of information technologies and mathematical methods of investigations in medical-biological systems
•Technology of agents functioning in the Internet
•Control of sophisticated systems and methods of their decomposition
•Forming of optimum portfolios of financial and banking systems and risk control, etc.

The Department takes a very active part in strengthening the international relations of the University. This is realized by international programs of the University and as well as by personal contacts with foreign colleagues using the opportunities offered by different funds and programs (Tempus-Tacis, NATO Science, NISCUPP, USAID, UNDP/GEF, INTAS, Euroasia, Euromed, McArthur, ANSEF, SCOPES, etc.). As a result, in the last few years, efficient relations have been established between SEUA and a number of Universities in the USA, Sweden, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, UK. Some of the programs considerably help heightening the level of laboratory- computer base and providing the education of students according to modern standards.
